Title: | Alex David - Bane Of Suburbia | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Ryan Doromal | Year: | 1996
Description: | A poor RPG with very weak graphics, confusing and shallow story (which is a bit funny on some places) and repetitive gameplay. Still, like all turn-based RPGs, it has that addictiveness.

Title: | Ambush At South Range II | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | M \ K Productions | Year: | 1995
Description: | A very poor RPG with terrible graphics and poor gameplay. Turn-based battles. Stupid story (blood bath in school). The game runs too fast on modern PCs and enemies attack you in real time so you'll need some sort of slowdown utility to be able to play the game. The game displays obvious lack of skill in all aspects, but it looks like a lot of effort was put into it. Still, that’s not enough.

Title: | Ancient Heroes | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Mark Henshaw | Year: | 2006
Description: | An average, text-based, role-playing fighting game. The player chooses one of several heroes available and fights his/her way through stages by battling various warriors. The game features a rather limited amount of options, but the interface is well designed. The game also lacks depth and more important, a save game feature since the player can die easily. The battle engine seems to be well developed. No music or sound effects.

Description: | A cool RPG maker also featuring an already made excellent role playing/adventure game about ancient Indians (quite cool). The RPG maker allows you to create any kind of RPG inside the maker's limitations (design of the screen, inventory control and tile by tile movement). It also features a sprites/tiles maker. Title: | BumFight! | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Doug Kavendek | Year: | 2003
Description: | A weird turn-based battle game with RPG elements where you fight against other bums by finding cash and weapons in trashcans. Quite good gameplay and many options. Title: | Cai's Quest 3 - The Runic War | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Venosoft | Year: | 2002
Description: | An average RPG. Quality of the graphics really dances around, from shamefully poor sprites of some monsters to very good looking scenery in battles. The game features huge amount of non-original music and few sound effects, but the music/sound is powered by DS4QB2 so it probably won't work in Windows 2000/NT and XP (you have an option to disable the music). The world seems large and interesting, but the gameplay is not well designed. During battles you need to wait terribly long to be able to attack, which is a cheap and annoying way to increase the play time of a game. Also, you can't save a game in any moment but only on some locations.

Title: | Candle In The Dark | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Jocke The Beast | Year: | 2000
Description: | A rather poor RPG with poor and flickerish graphics and little amount of it in general. The movement is tile by tile based. A great deal of the game is textual. Candle In The Dark also features some sloppiness, like the same city appearing on the map twice. On the beginning of the game it's difficult to win in any battle (questionable gameplay).

Title: | Chrystal Winter | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | BadMrBox and Deuce | Year: | 2003
Description: | A terrible RPG featuring ridiculously shallow story and very small world. The game only features the main world map and several monsters to battle (plus the boss battle). No villages or towns to explore, only shops where you can buy food and save game. Poor graphics and a doubtful battle engine. No sound or music. Chrystal Winter was made for some short competition (I guess) so the lack of quality is mostly result of this.

Title: | Dark Ages: The Continents | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Mike Hoopmann
| Year: | 1998 | | |||
Description: | A very good RPG featuring average graphics and tile by tile movement. The gameplay is very good and the story is solid. The problem is that the cities in the game are very small which ruins the "feeling" a bit. Don't be disappointed by the first part of the game (before the cave). Dark Ages world is much larger than what you may think in the beginning. MIDI background music.

Title: | Dies Irae Remake | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Jonathan Edwards | Year: | 2004
Description: | A very poor RPG which is practically unplayable. Monsters attack you every 6 to 8 steps and getting anywhere in the beginning of the game (in the woods) is almost impossible. Maps are terrible designed and only allow you to follow a preset and annoyingly winding path. The graphics are good and due the overall effort put in the writing of this game I'm giving it such a generous score. Only for RPG masochists.

Title: | DreamScape | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | BjM Software | Year: | 2001
Description: | A very nice RPG/action game with great graphics (best 2D graphics in a QBasic game ever, by my opinion). It would be a great game if it wasn't so short. You'll need half an hour to finish it, but it's definitely worth being downloaded. DreamScape doesn't feature any sound or music.

Title: | Elysian Fields | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Hyper Dimension Software | Year: | 1998
Description: | This is a rather mediocre (if not less than that) RPG despite the designer’s boasting and the lies he wrote about the "greatness" of the game in the documentation. The graphics are rather poor. The graphic effects and animations during battles are annoying and awfully long. Monsters attack you way too frequent. Some monsters that attack you don't belong to the world you are in (like Aliens). Elysian Fields is very linear (no side missions). It's also an extremely tedious game (I won it by cheating). The story is very good, but some dialogues are all wrong - characters using words like "ninja" or "dude". The huge effort put in the game is very visible, but the flaws prevail. Only for hard core RPG fans.

Title: | In The Nocturne | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | DarkDread | Year: | 2003

Title: | Kids of Karendow Chapter 1 | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Phat Kids | Year: | 2000
Description: | An excellent RPG featuring a very large world and great (as well as equally vulgar) humor. Very good story and plot development. The graphics are very good while the design and technical perfection of the overall game is average and far from perfect. But the great gameplay, the huge world and the humor, make this RPG one of the best ever made in QBasic. Kids of Karendow also features Sound Blaster background music. Highly recommended!

Title: | Land of Illusions Full Demo Release | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Skywaffle Productions | Year: | 1998
Description: | A demo of an above average RPG. The graphics are nice or better and the gameplay is very good. The biggest plus of this game is the technical perfection of the engine so everything runs smooth and battles are very enjoyable to play. Tile by tile movement and turn-based battle system. The game is rather linear and not too difficult, but it’s quite long for a demo. Recommended.

Description: | An absolutely horrible RPG with a shallow story, terrible game world and terrible code/design. Title: | Mini RPG 2 | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | JAWS V soft. | Year: | 1999
Description: | Interesting RPG that embodies the word "mini" in everything. The characters are small looking, the game world is small and battle options are minimal. The graphics are made in EGA style, but they are excellent and the characters are very well animated. Despite its "mini" concept this is a rather addictive game. The only problem I see with the game is that the battles are too slow-paced and the game is too straight-forward. PC Speaker sound effects.

Title: | Mini RPG 3 | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | JAWS V soft. | Year: | 1997
Description: | A game with the identical concept and design as in Mini RPG 2, but this sequel features even better character animation (it's great) and a bit more interesting (and amusing) story. Sadly, the game world is very small again. Like in Mini RPG 2, this game is all about fighting battles and leveling up.

Title: | MiniRPG1 Boardgame | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | JAWS V soft. | Year: | 2000
Description: | A RPG played on a hexagonal map. By using roulette (spinning arrow) the characters move and attack enemies. The battle system is a bit more complex and interesting than in Mini RPG 2&3. The graphics are absolutely excellent while the gameplay is another thing. In this game you compete against 3 other computer controlled characters in a race to capture King’s pet dragon Saurdox. What is annoying is that you have to watch opponents move and fight while the battles are annoyingly slow-paced like in other Mini RPG games. You can speed up the game, but then you lose the atmosphere and don't experience the wonderful animations properly. Definitely worth being checked because of the excellent graphics and animations. The game doesn't feature any sound effects or music.

Title: | Mirkwood - Middle Earth Tale III. | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Jocke The Beast | Year: | 2001
Description: | A mediocre RPG. Average graphics. Tile by tile movement. Minimal animation. A big plus is the large amount of dialogues. The game world is not designed so well. For example, you get various objects from strangers, scattered around the forest dead ends, for no reason. Battles are textual.

Title: | Mysterious Song | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | DarkDread | Year: | 2000
Description: | A very nice role playing game. It features very nice graphics and Sound Blaster music. I personally don't like how the tiles blend together in this game and I found the cities/castles too small. Mattress Warrior and In The Nocturne feature slightly better done tilesets. The game is ruined in part by unnecessary amount of leveling up and battles. It has content for around 1 hour of play time, but you'll need over 3 hours to finish the game. One could also complain on the fact that the characters in the game don't move and are always facing toward south. Still, this designer is a synonym for quality so you can’t make a mistake by downloading this game. Just have in mind what you will get; flashy package, but repetitive gameplay.

Title: | Nietzsche Special Edition | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | SJ Zero | Year: | 2004
Description: | If there is a console style QBasic RPG you should avoid and which features pixel by pixel scrolling, this is the one. Very badly designed graphics (from badly drawn characters to badly composed wall patterns) and terrible gameplay. Very difficult to get anywhere in the beginning of the game. I've killed over 20 monsters and can't get out of the first hall in the game. Very cheap way to increase the play time of a game. No way I'm playing this for 5 hours just so I could get out of the first 30 meters of the game. Also, I'm puzzled with the amounts of damage I inflict on the monsters and vice-versa during battles. The designer did put some effort in the story, but that's not enough. The extra download is the game packed as an installation program.

Description: | An interesting ASCII RPG made for the QB Express "Text Map Game" challenge where you had to create a text game using only one map (or screen interface). So you can guess that Numbervold is a single screen, textual RPG. It features a very interesting and original gameplay (numbers on the map determine how much spaces you move). Description: | An excellent ASCII graphics (text-based) RPG featuring background music and very good gameplay. I disliked the designers using common graphics for battles, shops and some other things while the rest of the graphics are consisted of ASCII characters. Maybe some people like this kind of mixture, but I don't. If you are going to make an ASCII graphics game then stick with that kind of graphics. Other than that, a very appealing RPG. Description: | An excellent action adventure game. Not really a RPG, but Typosoft guys call it a RPG. If you ever played God Of Thunder, this game uses the exactly same concept/gameplay. The game world is consisted of single screen locations. The gameplay features real time battles (different spells you can use and monsters summon), single screen puzzles (getting from one side of the screen to another by pushing stones, etc.) as well as adventure puzzles (talking to characters, exchanging objects). Excellent graphics and excellent design. A relatively large game. I was unable to test the sound and music. It's powered by DS4QB so it's very unlikely you will be able to play the game with the sound turned on in Windows 2000/NT or Windows XP. Highly recommended! Description: | A poor text-based RPG. While the movement and the interface are very nice, this is one of those games that requires too much patience (money gathering and leveling up). Some really high prices for certain items in the game make it unreasonably difficult. The game is also ruined with several stupid characters, like Mariah Carey (I’m serious) or the guy who lost his golden watch who are so out of place (the game is placed in a fantasy worlds with goblins and similar). And then there are the weapons like laser guns and TNT together with swords. A quite long game, but the flaws prevail. Turn-based battle system.

Title: | Siege Of Gondor - Middle Earth Tale I. | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Jocke The Beast | Year: | 2000
Description: | A below average RPG featuring tile by tile movement and not a very good game engine (flickering). Average graphics. The game is placed in the Lord Of The Rings world.

Title: | Syraphage Demo Build 3 | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Alphx Software | Year: | 1998
Description: | One of the few "walk around" RPG demos I've included in the directory. The reason why Syraphage is included are the amazing graphics. Something really special. No real play value in this demo. You can only walk around the town and enter few buildings.

Title: | Tabu | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Skarab (Circe Software) | Year: | 2000
Description: | A very poor RPG that features a somewhat interesting story and graphical design (quite original). The graphics are very poor and the game is very short. Tabu is playable, but barely. Too bad that this designer was not interest to spend more time on one project since he shows potential. In the documentation for this game he wrote that he vowed to release AT LEAST one game EVERY WEEK. Go figure.

Title: | Tales of Griffin, The | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | BadMrBox | Year: | 2005
Description: | A very small and below average mini RPG. Like most mini RPGs, it's consisted of huge amount of battles for the purpose of leveling up, until becoming strong enough to fight some sub-boss, only to repeat this procedure for the next boss. The graphics are nice, featuring even quality and unique style. The scrolling also feels very smooth. Sadly, the game is very monotonous and finishing it is not very rewarding. Very little new content is revealed by making progress in the game. Solid battle engine.

Title: | Tales of Sophy, The | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | BadMrBox | Year: | 2002
Description: | A below average if not poor RPG. It's quite short. You'll need half an hour to finish it. The battle engine is solid, minus the lack of magic spells. The graphics are below average, but overall the game is cute and fun. Amusing dialogues. No sound or music.

Title: | The RPG ALPHA 0.04 | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Milo Sedlacek and Ryan Ross | Year: | 1997
Description: | A walk around demo of a historical value. Brilliant Milo's code makes this scrolling engine one of the fastest ever in QBasic. Sadly, this fact today weights nothing. Very good graphics.

Title: | TheGame Demo 2 | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Tsugumo (Jeff Hangartner) | Year: | 1997
Description: | This little "walk around" RPG demo is one of the most important pieces of the QBasic community history. It started the notorious QBasic RPG crazy and practically changed the entire scene which existed at that time. Today it doesn't look very impressive, but due its cult status it had to be included in this kind of archive. Only for people interested in the history of the QBasic community.

Title: | Tower of Fortune | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Mario Soft. | Year: | 2001
Description: | A demo of a first person perspective RPG (like Bard's Tale). The graphics are very good and, by my opinion, better than in Legend of Lith 2 and Hamster Republic's RPG. I'm not sure how long the demo is since the package comes with inadequate documentation. A turn-based battle engine is implemented as well as many options. MIDI background music.

Title: | Untitled | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | FrozenEmu & Tsugumo | Year: | 2000
Description: | A very cool RPG demo with excellent graphics and MIDI background music. It offers a small piece of storyline, though the number of locations in this demo is much more than many poor QBasic RPGs feature. Still, a quite short and easy (on purpose) RPG demo. Worth being checked due its quality and the fact Tsugumo worked on it.

Title: | Wandering Hamster Demo | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Hamster Republic Productions | Year: | 2004
Description: | An excellent RPG made with the Official Hamster Republic RPG Construction Engine. The gameplay is great and the story is well written and funny. The graphics are very good, but they range from good to excellent. The excellent graphics prevail, but there is room for improvement. Also, there is whole lot of cool cinematics in the game. Since this is a demo it contains roughly three hours of play time, but there is a lot of different content in the demo. You won't be bored. The demo features nice background music, but no sound effects. Highly recommended!

Title: | Wrath Of Sona, The | Genre: | RPG | Developer: | Lost socK software | Year: | 1999
Description: | An average RPG whose strongest sides are its gameplay and length (size). Pixel-based movement. Turn-based battles. The Wrath Of Sona features very unbalanced quality of the graphics (from horrible to very good) and overall it's poorly designed. The game is accompanied with nice background music tracks. Many places, characters and events in this game don't sit well with me, seem out of place or don't make logic. I guess if you are into turn-based RPGs you might like The Wrath Of Sona. The author of this game doesn't consider it finished.
